Visual information processing in vertebrate animals starts in retinas. In recent electrophysiological studies, it has been demonstrated that the object motion segregated from the background motion that is due to, for example, fixational eye movement was computed, at least in part, by the retinal circuits. We have recently developed a numerical model that simulates this retinal computation at the neuronal level. In the present study, we made attempts, as the first step, to implement this model into a hardware CMOS transistor circuit with a one-dimensional photodiode array. Using discrete circuit components on breadboards, 20 cells for each of outer retinal neurons and 5 cells for each of wide-field amacrine cell and ganglion cell were constructed. In response to moving patterns of a striped image, the spatio-temporal response profiles of each neuron showed reasonable agreements with the numerical simulations in our model. |
