In spectrum sensing, it is determined if a primary user (PU) is present in the studied frequency band (hypothesis $H_1$). If the PU is determined not to be present (hypothesis $H_0$), the frequency band could be used by secondary (unlicensed) users (SUs) for opportunistic access without harmful interference to PUs. In this paper, we apply cyclostationary based signal detection for identifying also two additional situations, $H_2$: another SU is already present in the studied band, and $H_3$: another SU and the PU are both present. In our method, if $H_2$ is decided to be true, fairness among SUs is increased by allowing the newly arrived SU to share the band with those SUs already using it. In the case of our proposed novel hypothesis $H_3$, we signal the SU using the band that it might be interfering with the PU and so it needs to vacate the frequency band immediately. This leads to increased protection of the PU. However, in the case where signal specifications such as carrier frequencies of SUs and the PU are the same or close, there may be false detection under $H_1$ and $H_2$ because of interference between SU and PU cyclic autocorrelation functions (CAFs).
To solve this problem, we present a condition that the frequency offset between SU's carrier frequency and PU's carrier frequency needs to satisfy so that the CAFs of SUs and the PU cause a minimal interference to each other.
Analysis of signal detection performance under $H_3$ where negligible correlation factor exists is introduced. In addition, the numerical results show that even with a small frequency offset it is possible to reliably distinguish between the hypotheses. |
