The involvement of inhibition function during garden-path recovery in sentence processing

(in English) This study investigated the involvement of the inhibition function during the garden-path recovery in sentence processing. We addressed this issue by examining whether the amount of garden-path effect measured in the self-paced reading task would correlate with the performance in the tasks that tap the inhibition function (e.g., Stroop task) and/or other cognitive abilities (e.g., reading span test). The correlation analyses revealed that only the performance in the Stroop task correlated with the amount of the garden-path effect. We argue that the inhibition function contributes significantly when a garden-path recovery becomes necessary.
