Slow-Light Silicon Mach-Zehnder Modulator Based-on Cascaded Ring Resonators

(in English) For silicon modulators, introducing resonators is effective way to obtain compact size and power-efficient operations because it can enhance the modulation efficiency. We investigated cascaded ring-resonators in all-pass configuration for this purpose. This structure has enhanced phase-modulation for the light propagated due to slow-light effect for a given index change in the waveguide of the rings. In addition, by designing the number of the cascaded ring resonators, as well as the Q-values of them, it can provide a sufficient total modulation depth, without causing the bandwidth of the resonance, to be extremely narrow. We fabricated such devices on SOI substrate and confirmed seven-fold enhancement in modulation efficiency for a driving current at the resonant wavelengths, compared with a conventional non-resonant Mach-Zehnder modulator. Clear eye-openings were successfully obtained using pre-emphasis signals with the amplitude of only 1-V peak-to-peak in the wavelength range of 1 nm without dynamic control on the resonant wavelength of the resonators.
