Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Recently, the relationship between pneumonia and aspiration is designated. It is deliberated that the number of the aspiration patients is on the increase because of increasing of old people or patients with serious movement disorders. In this research, differences of characteristics of deglutition between healthy subjects and dysphagia patients were investigated using surface electromyogram (sEMG) as a method for evaluation of swallowing with the videofluorography (VF) confirmation. Five healthy elder (65-75 years old, one male and four females), and eight dysphagia patients (59-83 years old, six males and two females) were participated. Subjects were instructed to lie on a bed with 30 degree inclination and to swallow 2.5 ml of barium-coated jelly. During swallowing, sEMG signals were measured. As results, duration of muscle activity, muscle activity power per second, ratio of activity power per second between geniohyoid muscle and stemothyroid muscle in pharyngeal stage, and beginning time difference between geniohyoid muscle and sternothyroid muscle was different in the dysphagia group compared with the healthy group. Additionally, the relationship between a characteristic of dysphagia and that of sEMG might be available to associate. Therefore, it was suggested that sEMG could be effective for the objective evaluation of swallowing.
