The message deliveries based on the store-carry-forward routing schemes, such as epidemic routing, are one of the fundamental and useful methods for establishing communications over a challenged environment characterized by intermittent connectivity, high loss rates and long propagation delays. Delay/Disruption/Disconnect Tolerant Networking (DTN) is the key technology that facilitates data transfers in challenged networks. The message deliveries based on the store-carry-forward routing schemes are characterized by unpredictable mobility, heterogeneity of contact rates and lack of global information. Successful delivery of messages at low costs and delays in such networks is necessary. Most forwarding algorithms avoid the cost associated with flooding the network by forwarding only to nodes that are likely to be good relays, using a quality metric associated with nodes. However, it is not trivial to decide whether an encountered node is a good relay at the moment of encounter. In this paper, we develop a new routing strategy based on the optimal stopping theory. The proposed strategy is optimal from the view of the expected number of the nodes that is likely to meet the destination node. We evaluate our algorithm by the simulation using a model based on an actual mobility and show that our algorithm achieves high successful rate with small number of message copies in comparison with other previous algorithms. |
