An Analysis of Redundancy Observed in Video Sharing Service Traffic At Network Edges.

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Recently, video sharing services such as YouTube have become popular and account for a large amount of traffic that presses not only the core of the network but also the edges.
To alleviate this problem, it is considered important to eliminate redundant traffic by data cache.
In this study, we focus on the geographic and time locality of the YouTube traffic on a network and analyze the redundancy of the campus network traffic in the packet trace captured for about one day. We also estimate the reduction of traffic when data cache were in place at the gateway.
We have discovered that the 31% of the YouTube traffic turns out to be redundant.
This redundant traffic is divided into two parts, one generated by a single user, and the other generated by multiple users, which dominates in the trace.
Thus, we conclude that the reduction of the latter would be most effective if data cache were enabled at the gateway of the network under consideration.
