[Fellow Memorial Lecture] Motion Induced Blindness, Artificial Scotomas, and Perceptual Filling-in

(in English) Filling-in (FI) is one of the most mysterious and profound visual functions. We investigated the FI utilizing yet another curious discovery generally referred to Motion Induced Blindness (MIB). In the conventional MIB, the test figures had been observed disappearing in random or stochastic way, we tried the synchronization of the disappearance of the test figures. We examined also the conditions of the eccentricity; whether the equi-eccentricity would be critical to synchronous MIB. Interestingly, the condition didn’t mater. The Flicker Induced Blindness (FIB) was one of the other variants of MIB. We found that rather low temporal frequency flickering worked for FIB. We compiled the findings together and devised the novel inducing figure shapes and motions by which we succeeded that the large size test figures in MIB could disappear whose size was equivalent to the natural blind spots of human. In literature, the human blind spots were fully investigated where FI were confirmed in various ways. Since the discovery of MIB, the disappearances of MIB test figures were identified with the Artificial Scotomas (AS). It was interesting question whether the AS created by MIB could work in the same way as the real blind spots. The general conclusions in literature were so positive that the background and/or even the textures were filled in and perceived as they were at the disappeared spots. We repeated the investigations of the FI to AS which were fairly large in size. Our tentative conclusions were positive and negative. The background luminance or color could fill-in, though neither the simple line segments nor the texture would fill-in.
