Fabry-Perot etalon (FPE), which is an optical frequency filter with a high resolution, degrades its characteristics with birefringence. Birefringence dependence of transmission bandwidth, channel separation and bandwidth utilization efficiency of FPE is investigated for cases of random polarization state signal input and linearly polarized light input fixed to π/4 direction with the birefringence axis. For random polarization state signal input case, we found that transmission bandwidth and bandwidth utilization efficiency linearly decrease with an increase of birefringence, while there is no influence on the channel separation. For π4 direction linearly polarized light input case, we found that appropriate birefringence contributes to increase of the bandwidth utilization efficiency on a sacrifice of a little amount of the maximum transmittance. |
