Practical Abdominal Fat Scanner utilizing Electrical Impedance Tomography

(in English) TThe aim of the present study was the development of a safe and low-cost visceral fat estimating device using electrical impedance tomography to image cross-sections of the human abdomen. The device has a mechanism to attach 64 electrodes with double-ring allocation. Alternating current of 1.0 mArms with frequency of 500 kHz was applied to subject's umbilical level, then the potential difference between every adjoining two electrodes and the abdominal outline were measured. After that, the conductivity image was derived by means of iteration of the finite element method and non-linear numerical optimization. We estimated the ratio of the abdominal fat by the fitting of the truncated mixed-distribution on the brightness of pixels in the image. This report describes the whole procedure from the impedance measurement to the abdominal fat estimation. By the modification of the electrode allocation, electronic circuit design and image reconstruction software, derived images were improved, allowing us to achieve stable imaging though the number of measured subjects was limited.
