| (in English) | Recent production studies have shown that the linear order of NPs is affected by animacy in a way that an animate NP tends to be produced earlier than an inanimate NP. However, since this was only examined in a limited number of languages, it is not clear whether this tendency can be observed universally or constrained by typological differences. In this study we conducted a picture description task by manipulating patient animacy and examined how animacy affects word order in a verb-initial language (VOS) such as Kaqchikel. Our results demonstrate that, in contrast to previous findings, VOS sentences are more likely to be produced when patient NPs are inanimate than when they are animate. | |
