An Ultra-High-Resolution Large-Dynamic-Range Fiber Optic Static Strain Sensor Using Pound-Drever-Hall Demodulation Technique

(in English) In this paper we report the realization of a fiber optic static strain sensor with ultra-high resolution and large dynamic range for the applications of geophysical research. The sensor consists of a pair of fiber Fabry-Perot interferometers (FFPI) for strain sensing and reference, respectively. A tunable fiber laser is used to interrogate the FFPIs, and Pound-Drever-Hall technique is employed for demodulation. With a cross-correlation algorithm to calculate the resonance difference between the two FFPIs, ultra-high wavelength resolution corresponding to static strain resolution of 4.5 nano-strains was demonstrated; the dynamic range can be extended up to hundreds of micro-strains.
