Supported varistor overvoltage limiter with high energy-consuming ability and high durability for DC high voltage systems

(in English) Some of the biggest oxide-zinc varistors produced nowadays are used as overvoltage protection elements in vacuum circuit-breakers operating on the basis of counter-current breaking. However, they do not ensure sufficient protection reliability when long-lasting impulse waves of relatively high currents occur, on account of their faster degradation. Physical model of circuit-breaker with varistor overvoltage limiter supported by the additional parallel circuit was designed and tested in a short-circuit laboratory of the Department of Electrical Apparatus of the Technical University of Lodz. The obtained results confirm that using such a type of construction is technically possible and reasonable. By largely limiting current surges in varistors it is possible to extend their exploitation period considerably. The results of measurements carried out on the physical model of the overvoltage limiter with the parallel supporting circuit are presented in this paper.
