Gas sensing with Local plasmon resonance

(in English) Robots equipped with gas sensors have already been studied and applied for detecting the gas distribution or determining the gas source. Because the purpose of this kind of robots is to recognize the environment condition while their moving, a fast and compact gas sensing device is required. However, the response time of the conventional gas sensors are too long for the robot application. For example, the response time of semiconductor gas sensor is in a few minutes. Based on this fact, we focused on the localized plasmon phenomenon of noble metal nanoparticles (NPs), and developed a gas sensor which responses within a second. In this report, aims to increase the sensitivity of NPs, (1) the relationship between the preparation condition and the optical properties of NPs, (2) the difference between AuNPs and AgNPs, (3) the effect of thermal annealing treatment, (4) the effect of Au colloid surface modification are examined. As a result, fast response of all NPs, the large sensitivity of non annealed AgNPs, and the sharp resonance of annealed NPs are obtained.
