Analytical study of feedback-based rate control at application layer for video streaming services

(in English) We consider the effect of feedback-based rate controls on video quality from queueing theoretical point of view. We model the behavior of packets and data blocks stored in a client node as a discrete-time two-queue concatenated system with state-dependent packet arrivals. As for performance measures, we derive the starvation probability that the receiver buffer has no data block, and the overflow probability that an arriving data block is discarded due to lack of space in the receiver buffer. Numerical examples show that the feedback-based rate control with a small increase in packet-sending rate makes these probabilities significantly small.
