Recently, in many fields such as microarray analysis, we need to analyze high-dimensional data with small sample sizes. In this paper, we consider discriminant analysis for two classes with high-dimensional data. It is important to know when a good discrimination is possible or impossible. There exists much previous work when the two distributions are normal and the two variance-covariance matrices are equal. However, from some difficulties of analysis, there exists little work when the two variance-covariance matrices are different. Recently, Aoshima and Yata (2011) proposed a discriminant function such that the misclassification rate converges to zero as the dimension of the data tends to infinity ($d$-consistency) under a condition without assuming that the two variance-covariance matrices are equal. In this paper, we show that $d$-consistency is not satisfied for any discriminant function under a condition with assuming that the two variance-covariance matrices are different. |
