Stochastic State Transitions in Recurrent Neural Networks with Sparse Asymmetric Connections
Koretaka Ogata, Takuma Tanaka, Kiyohiko Nakamura (Tokyo Tech) NC2011-149
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Recently many studies have reported that neurons form clustered structures in neocortical microcircuits more than expected in random networks. In this paper, we show that stochastic transition from a long lasting quasi-stable state to another occurs in recurrent neural networks with dense intra-cluster and sparse inter-cluster connections. To analyse the network dynamics, we derive order parameter equations and examine equilibrium points and their stability. Then we investigate parameter dependency of statistical properties such as lifetime of quasi-stable states and randomness of state transitions. Finally, we discuss the relationship between the behavior of the model and physiological experimental results.
