Reducing power consumption and improving QoS in cloud computing environments

(in English) Cloud computing services allow the user to rent, only at the time when needed, only a desired amount of computing resources (processing ability and storage capacity) out of a huge mass of distributed computing resources without worrying about the locations or internal structures of these resources. The widespread use of cloud computing services is expected to increase the power consumption and it is recognized that the energy consumption of ICT devices in cloud computing equipment should be a key issue.
First, this paper presents a method of reducing the power consumed by ICT devices in cloud computing equipment, which uses WAN accelerators as part of cloud resources and tries to increase the packet transfer rate in the network temporarily. Next, it discusses the possibility of detecting a sign of service quality deterioration by monitoring the power consumption pattern of ICT devices sent from power sensors, assuming that the coming introduction of smart grids will result in the attachment of a power sensor to each ICT device. Finally, this paper proposes to dynamically apply WAN accelerator within the network, in order to prevent the degradation in performance on live migration of virtual machines over a wide area.
