To explore the usability of the neuro-electrodes made of carbon nanotubes (CNT), we have recently developed needle-shaped CNT bundle electrodes with submicron diameters at the tip, and demonstrated that those electrodes are usable as intracellular stimulating electrodes in acutely dissociated neurons by means of electrophysiological experiments in vitro. In the present report, we tested if such a CNT bundle electrode can be fabricated as having enough mechanical strength for penetrating a neural tissue and electrical properties suitable for extracellular electrodes. The experiments have shown that the needle-shaped CNT bundles having the tip diameters of around one micron can be inserted into the slice preparation of mouse cortex without a significant deformation, and that the electrical impedance of those electrodes measured in physiological saline was around one mega-ohm at one kilo-hertz. |
