Recently, energy consumption of routers is becoming a problem so power reduction becomes urgent and important challenge. However existing routers always work 100% of their potentials regardless of traffic volume. For this reason we proposed a new router architecture called Sliced Router Architecture, in which each component of routers is divided into multiple sub components at LSI level, and the power management is performed to control the state of sub components based a traffic volume. In this paper, we propose Sliced Packet Buffer with power management by traffic volume and buffer occupancy. We also propose a model of accurate performance evaluation on energy consumption of Sliced Packet Buffer, by taking memory operations and buffer delay into consideration through trace-driven simulation we show that Sliced Packet Buffer can reduce up to 54% of power consumption. |
