Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) This study explores whether social networking services have negative effects on user’s personal relationships with their old friends by the two qualitative/quantitative surveys among Japanese young adults. Survey 1 (N = 41) was conducted to extract what interpersonal troubles respondents went through on social networking communication by using open-ended questions. Results of Survey 1 demonstrated that one of the most common personal troubles which respondents had experienced was a discord derived from slander of their old friends against respondents or other friends written in their blogs, diaries and tweets. Survey 2 ( N = 92) was conducted to quantitatively validate the assumption of Survey 1 and found that respondents perceived that they tended to have higher opportunities to be exposed to general negative remarks by their friends in social networking communication than those in face-to-face communication.
