Sign, Language and Conditioned Reflex -- Inspired by Suzuki Takao's "Vocal Communication in Bird : A Semiotic Analysis" --

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The author got unimaginable occasions to participate a bimonthly linguistic salon, Taka-no-Kai, hosted by Suzuki Takao, reading his books and listening to his speeches. It was valuable and stimulating for my research on the origin and mechanism of language to directly have access to Suzuki’s unique ideas and original experiments. Taking this opportunity, I would like to express my deepest appreciation to Prof. Suzuki and secretariat of the Salon and brief on the ideas and breakthrough that I obtained through Taka-no-kai activities.
He pointed out that, while call notes of birds are representation of their emotions, human can create signs independent from emotions. Thus human signs are arbitrary and he called such signs as “Empty Signs”. Contrary to other linguists who tried to identify linguistic elements in animal communication, he tried to discover animal semiotic factor in human language. He introduced the observation and experiments of ethologists, Timbergen and Lorenz, on the Innate Releasing Mechanism (IRM) and Releaser Stimuli. Timbergen revealed that releasing stimuli were simple pattern memory of short neck bird and its flying direction. Then all of a sudden, a sentence in Pavlov’s Conditioned Reflex popped up: instinctive reactions are reflexes. If so, instinctive IRM, Reflex/Conditioned Reflex and human language are identical semiotic phenomena, taking place by pattern matching between input stimuli and pattern memories.
