In the image sensors field, two type of image sensors, CIS and CCD, have been developed competitively with their own advantages. since CIS can be realized in low cost by using standard CMOS process, CIS has dominated over CCD in the mobile market by improving its fixed pattern noise(FPN). Two recent major requirements for CIS (CMOS image sensor) are high resolution with small optical size and high frame rate to realize high speed object without artifacts. This paper presents the obstacles in shrinking the pixel size for high resolution and various attempts, such as light guide technology and back side illumination, to overcome such obstacles. Moreover, recent trend in high speed circuit technology and analysis on different types of ADCs are presented. Additionally, new applications such as 3D imaging will also be addressed. |
