A recurrent network where excitatory and inhibitory neurons are mutually connected causes spike propagation when excitatory connections are updated through an asymmetric STDP rule. Furthermore, the anisotropy of connections makes radial spike propagation directional. From the anatomical and physiological findings in the hippocampal CA3, the CA3 region has a capability to cause directional spike propagation. In the hippocampus, long-term depression (LTD) of STDP disappears with an increase in acetylcholine concentration. In this study, we show that the modulation of LTD impairs the directional spike propagation and the distance-dependent synaptic weight distribution emerging in the recurrent network. Directional spike propagation is observed from many brain regions; therefore we discuss the contribution of distance-dependent synaptic weight distribution and the impairment to information processing in the brain regions causing directional spike propagation. |
