One of the most indispensable impacts on onboard power consumption is generally caused by a transmission power amplifier among the other satellite bus subsystems so far. Especially, in deep space missions, it is quite difficult to reduce onboard transmission RF power due to the ultra-long distance communication between the earth station and a satellite. This research proposes an X-band high efficiency onboard SSPA for deep space missions by focusing on GaN HEMT whose remarkable material properties, such as high thermal conductivity, wide band gap, and high breakdown voltage, are suitable for high power and high efficiency applications. This SSPA aims to be tested onboard in a JAXA’s deep space engineering demonstration satellite as mission equipment in the near future. The results of preliminary design and evaluations of some trial productions using COTS device will be shown in the conference. |
