Difference frequency generation (DFG) from two-tone coherent optical signals based on nonlinear optical effects is discussed for signal conversion from optical to micro-/millimeter-/THz wave frequency bands. The signal conversion by DFG shows good linearity even though the conversion efficiency is low owing to the Manley-Rowe limitation. In addition, by utilizing DFG, signals from RF to THz bands can be injected directly into high frequency circuits without connection circuits for signal coupling. Therefore, a new type of RF-to-THz-signal control devices is obtainable with a compact structure and a low signal distortion. In this report, newly developed signal conversion devices using a nonlinear optical crystal embedded in a rectangular waveguide are presented. |
