Gas concentrations was successfully measured using the ultrasonic velocity difference. Each gas has its own specific value of sound velocity; therefore, when the gas is mixed, the sound velocity changes. The gas concentration was calculated from the difference in travelling time between a transmitter and a receiver before and after the gas mixture. The sound velocity in the gases are defined theoretically, thus the gas concentration can be accurately calculated by precise sound velocity measurements. This method can be also used as a standard gas concentration measurement. For example, the oxygen concentration in the air was measured as 20.991% which was close to the standard air value. It was also found that hydrogen concentration in the air can be detected within the range from 100ppm to 100%. |
