This paper proposes a new method for binalizing color characters in scene images using K-means clustering and support vector machines, and recognizing binarized characters via the modified projection distance. In particular, automatic selection of the number of clusters in K-means application based on the sum of within-cluster variances realizes a more stable and effective generation of optimal binarized character images. Experimental results made on the public dataset “the Chars 74K” show that the proposed method achieves correctly binarized character image generation and selection rate of 97.6% and 85.6%, and the final character recognition rate of 63.0%, which are superior to those obtained by the conventional techniques. |
