Modulation of Neuronal Network Activity Using Magnetic Nanoparticle-Injected Astrocytes

(in English) Recently, some previous studies reported that astrocytes, a type of glial cells, modulate the neuronal network functions such as synaptic transmission, density, and conduction of action potential. However, widespread modulations of network-wide activity of neuronal cells by astrocytes are unknown. In this study, we developed a 3-Dimensional co-culture system for the evaluation of neuronal-asrtocytic network interactions by using the magnetic nanoparticles injected astrocytes and the magnetic force. In the results, the astrocytic network integration elicited the unexpected inhibition of neuronal spontaneous activity. In addition, the selective activation of astrocytes evoked the modulation of neuronal network activity.
