Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Among noninvasive neuroimaging methods, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) based on blood oxygenation level dependent (BOLD) effect is widely used. Recently, a new fMRI principle focusing on direct detecting of neural magnetic fields has attracted wide attention. In this study, we demonstrated the feasibility of an fMRI method using the spin-lock sequence, which is sensitive to oscillating magnetic fields such as neural magnetic fields. First, we visualized the magnetization performance during the spin-lock sequence by means of the Bloch simulation. Secondly, by both of the Bloch simulation and the phantom studies modeling the neural magnetic fields, we showed that the externally applied oscillating magnetic fields decrease MR signals. These results suggest that the fMRI method using spin-lock sequence is promising to detect neural activities directly. In case of minute oscillating magnetic fields, however, changes in MR signals would be also minute, and may be hidden by the changes due to BOLD effect. Thus, ultra-low field MRI, which is not affected by BOLD effect, is suitable for the direct detection of neural magnetic fields.
