Estimation of Cerebral Blood Flow Changes from fNIRS and fMRI

(in English) Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) are well-known methods to measure signals related to hemodynamic response associated with neural activities. We propose a novel method to estimate oxy, deoxy-hemoglobin concentrations as the latent variables reflecting hemodynamic response from not only fNIRS but also fMRI signals that are known as a more accurate measurement modality than fNIRS. In the proposed method, we model observation processes of fNIRS and fMRI signals from cerebral blood flow changes with parameters that connect the two modalities. The reliable estimation could be obtained by using with the proposed method owing to the accuracy of fMRI signals. In this technical report, we investigate the estimation accuracy of the proposed method by simulations, and examine the estimated cerebral blood flow changes in application to real data sets from finger tapping experiments.
