By transmitting texture and depth maps of the views captured using two adjacent cameras, the user can synthesize any middle view with a depth image based rendering (DIBR) technique such as 3D-warping, which provides the user with continuous view angles and is key technique for Free Viewpoint TV (FTV). Because multiple views must be delivered through a bandwidth-limited wireless network, one important issue is how to reduce the source coding rate. The standard multi-view video codec H.264 MVC explores the inter-view and intra-view correlation to reduce the coding rate per frame. Because all the views are required at the client side for decoding, it is apparently not transmission efficient. A better solution is using H.264 to differentially encode the two adjacent views separately to reduce the total transmission rate. Multiple description coding (MDC) encodes the two adjacent views into multiple descriptions. This inspires another option: sending only part of each view, which can greatly reduce the required bandwidth, although precious battery life must be consumed to interpolate the skipped frames before synthesizing the middle view. In this paper, we investigate both transmission quality and energy consumption under the bandwidth constraint. We formulate the problem into an optimization problem, i.e., maximizing system utility, and propose an algorithm to solve it. The simulation results show that our proposed scheme provides a significant advantage over competing schemes in typical network conditions. |
