Preliminary study on a warning system using black light to prevent going out of elderly people with dementia

The wandering of elderly people with dementia is a heavy burden on caregivers. Some sensor systems using a transmitter have been developed to prevent elderly people with dementia from leaving the premises. However, the transmitter must be carried and may become lost; in addition, the battery of the transmitter must be changed. To solve these problems, a warning system using image processing was developed. The system uses fluorescent dye that becomes visible by irradiation with black light. The fluorescent dye is painted in a simple shape on the clothes of an elderly person. If a fluorescent color is detected, our system is informed to caregivers. As a preliminary experiment, 3 colors (red, green and blue) of fluorescent dye were painted on cloths of 12 different colors. The painted simple shape using green fluorescent dye is detected on clothes of all 12 colors. |
