A study on two-layer multicast to support mobile source terminals and its router placement technique in wireless mesh networks

(in English) Services to provide live streaming video from mobile sources are becoming widespread, including Ustream. It is expected that this type of services will be deployed in local community networks based on wireless mesh networks, in addition to the current services provided in the Internet. For providing live video streaming services in wireless mesh networks from mobile sources, support of multicast including source terminal handoff will be needed.In this paper, we propose a r two-layer multicast architecture for wireless mesh networks where only pre-selected APs have router functions and the rest of APs have layer 2 switching function for inter-AP communication respectively. Here, a shortest path based multicast tree is constructed rooted from a router closest a mobile source terminal, where the tree traverses the rest of routers and APs closest to each of receiver terminalsIn terms of bandwidth utilization efficiency, APs to which routers are connected should be selected so that average end-to-end hop length along the multicast tree is as small as possible. This paper presents two types of router allocation methods, and show the performance evaluation results by simulation .
