Effects of linear distance on the processing of Japanese relative clauses

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Two hypotheses have figured prominently in research on the processing of relative clauses: the structural distance hypothesis and the linear distance hypothesis The structural distance hypothesis predicts that the longer the structural distance between a filler and a gap is, the heavier the processing cost becomes. On the other hand, the linear distance hypothesis claims that the linear distance between a filler and a gap is responsible for the processing cost of a relative clause. Some previous experimental studies compared reading times for subject and object relative clauses in Japanese, and found that the latter requires longer reading times. While the previous findings seem to provide support in favor of the structural distance hypothesis over the linear distance hypothesis, they do not immediately falsify the latter since the effects of linear distance might have been masked by the effects of structural distance. The present study investigates whether the linear distance also has an effect on the processing of relative clauses. Using a self-paced reading task, we measured reading times for indirect object relative clauses, and found that sentences with a longer filler-gap linear distance require longer reading times than those with a shorter filler-gap linear distance. These results comport well with the linear distance hypothesis, suggesting that the linear distance between a filler and a gap is closely related with the processing cost of relative clauses.
