Theoretical Derivation of Optimal Line Space in Kanji Documents in Terms of Accommodation in Human Vision

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) We have already developed the method that theoretically derives the optimal line space to make documents the most legible in terms of accommodation by using the two-dimensional model of the accommodation mechanism. In order to verify the method’s effectiveness, this report applies the method to actual documents in which many identical Kanji characters form sentences. Consequently, from one of the model’s two kinds of responses to the Kanji documents, the following results are obtained: (1) the document style (vertical or horizontal writing) can be detected by comparing the model’s evaluation function values; (2) the theoretically ratio of the optimal line space length to the character height is nearly equal to the conventional one; (3) the optimal line space length changes depending on font size in the same way as the conventional results. These results suggest that the proposed method is effective in deriving the optimal line space to make documents the most legible and that the optimal line space can be closely related to the accommodation mechanism.
