Cellular mobile radio communications have evolved from the 1st generation using analog technology to the 2nd generation using digital technology, and then to the 3rd generation. Every 10 years, new generation systems appeared. The 3.9th generation mobile system service called the long term evolution (LTE) was launched at the end of 2010. The evolution of cellular communications technology will continue from the 3.9th generation LTE to the 4th generation LTE-Advanced. The mobile communications traffic in 2020 is expected to increase by about 1,000 times that of 2010 because of increasing popularity of broadband data services such as high quality video. Energy efficient (green) and spectrally efficient wireless networks need to be developed to meet the demand. Due to limited available frequency bandwidth, the same frequency must be reused at spatially separated base stations and hence, co-channel interference is produced. An objective of cellular communications technology is to achieve as high data rate as possible by allowing a certain amount of co-channel interference under limited frequency bandwidth and transmit power (or energy). What is the 5th generation technology after LTE-A? In this paper, we overview the evolution of mobile communications technology over the past 30 years and provide a perspective of cellular mobile communication technology. |
