| (in English) | Recently, many sleep researchers are interested in the relationship between sleep-wake rhythm and synaptic plasticity. In this study, we performed whole-cell patch-clamp recordings from layer II/III pyramidal neurons of somatosensory cortex in acute slices of the rats that had been awake or asleep to investigate the effect of wake on excitatory synaptic transmission. We found that i) current-voltage relationship of EPSCs showed inward rectification, and ii) eEPSCs were depressed by Philanthotoxin 74, which is antagonist of $Ca^{2+}$-permeable AMPA receptors, in slices of waking animals. Both results show that $Ca^{2+}$-permeable AMPA receptors levels are high during wakefulness and periods of wakefulness are associated with an increase in cortical synaptic strength. | |
