Aerial Media: Invisible, but Perceptible Media Technologies

(in English) Traditional media technologies have been developed to stimulate mainly human vision and auditory sensation. In addition, in the field of virtual reality, in conjunction with robotics and mechatronics technologies, haptic displays have been actively developed. While most haptic displays involve mechanical contact with solid objects, researchers have begun to utilize air as a medium to stimulate human tactile and olfactory sensations. Such technologies can be called "aerial media." Because air is usually invisible, air media has a possibility to complement visual media without interfering with each other. In this article, a survey of technologies related to aerial media is provided.
