Adaptive mechanism for motion perception under occluded condition in visual cortex
Yusuke Kanda, Osamu Watanabe (Muroran Inst. of Tech.) NC2013-70
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Motion information is processed in the dorsal stream that begins with V1 and goes to MT in the visual cortex.
Simoncelli, et al.(1988) proposed a hierarchical model that explains the motion detection mechanism between V1 and MT.
However, this model assumed an ideal condition that there was only one object
and was not considered the occlusion that was generally occurred in natural images.
In particular, motion perception under occluded condition raises an issue of low effective sampling rate.
Hayashi, et al.(2010) showed the psychophysical properties of slit motion perception
and suggested that an adaptive weighting mechanism for V1 response was necessary to interpret the results.
In this study, based on the Simoncelli's model, we proposed an adaptive mechanism for motion detection under occluded condition.
Specifically, we proposed a model for dynamic weighting based on the frequency included in V1 responses
and showed that our model could explain the Hayashi's results.
