Impact of Hidden Nodes on Wireless LAN System employing Wake-up Receiver

(in English) The energy wastefully consumed by idle access points (APs) has become one of the most serious problems in current wireless LANs. In order to solve this problem, we have proposed Radio-On-Demand (ROD) wireless LAN where a wake-up receiver is installed into each AP. In ROD wireless LAN, all idle APs are transited to a sleep state. These APs are woken up by stations (STAs) in an on-demand manner by a wake-up mechanism which exploits wireless LAN signals transmitted by STAs as wake-up signals. The wake-up signals are transmitted with CSMA/CA protocol, therefore, they are vulnerable to hidden nodes problem, which can increase the wake-up failure probability. In this paper, we evaluate the impact of hidden nodes on wake-up failure probability with experiments using our prototype of wake-up receiver. Moreover, by computer simulations, we evaluate the impact of hidden nodes on data communications after the successful wake-up. We compare the impact of hidden nodes on wake-up failure probability and data communications, and discuss the necessity of the wake-up when STAs are likely to be affected by hidden nodes. We also investigate how to reduce the number of wake-up failures caused by hidden nodes.
