A study for throughput enhancement of WLAN using 2.4 GHz by using 60 GHz WLAN

(in English) IEEE 802.11 based WLANs are extensively used. Many of WLAN stations operate mainly at 2.4 GHz band and share the radio band with other stations. The transmission rates of the stations depend on the distance between the AP of the WLAN and stations. If the WLAN includes stations which are far from the AP, the stations operate at low transmission rates and decrease the system throughput of the WLAN.
This paper proposes a system using a dual-band relay in order to improve system throughput of 2.4 GHz WLAN. In the system, the dual-band stations which transmit frames with using 2.4 GHz and 60 GHz bands relay the transmission of stations which operate at low transmission rates in order to shorten the transmission distance between the AP and stations so that the stations can use higher transmission rates than that before relaying. In addition, we discuss an asymmetric WLAN system which enables relay stations to transmit frames longer at 60 GHz band.
