Proposal of Theoretical Model for Foreign Object Detection in Wireless Power Transfer Systems
Atsuo Hatono (MJHEP Program) WPT2014-34
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) This paper proposes a integrated theoretical model for foreign object detection (FOD) combined with both circuit and field level phenomena. If there be foreign object in the gap of wireless power transfer systems, the object will be heated with eddy currents caused through the interaction with electromagnetic fields. The phenomenon cannot be formulated with the equivalent circuit theory for circuit levels. For the integration of field and circuit level phenomena, this paper formulates FOD with Maxwell Equations which are the fundamental principle of electromagnetic phenomena. This model showed that thermal effect is theoretically proportional to permeability of the foreign object which dominates eddy currents. Strong thermal effects of aluminum foils and stainless scrubbing brush can be explained with their huge mutual inductance comparatively large surface area to their volumes. Further, it also showed that it is difficult to detect the foreign objects through the shift of the mutual impedance of WPT since the effects of FOD to the circuit level appears in the real part of the mutual impedance of WPT. It is desired to develop the FOD sensing circuits sensitive to inductive components of mutual impedance.
