Wide deployment of photonic networks that use WSS-based ROADM nodes causes substantial increase in the number of WSSs traversed by an optical path. This results in a severe impairment by the filter narrowing effect of WSSs. In this paper, we propose a novel frequency assignment and switching strategy named Grouped Routing that can greatly reduce the deficiency stemming from filter narrowing. The proposed Grouped Routing divides the available frequency range for optical paths into several sub-bands. Guard-bands are only inserted between the sub-bands and switching at each node is done with the sub-bands granularity. These sub-bands define pipes that connect nodes on their ways and works as virtual fibers. The omission of guard-band within the pipes can be possible by optimization of spectrum allocation within each band. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the spectral efficiency of the proposed networks is improved by 30%. |
