Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Humans, using their finger tips, are able to detect fine mechanical stimulus and to recognize differences of texture. e.g. asperity, friction, heat and elasticity. We have developed an artificial MEMS tactile sensor that utilizes a number of leaning micro-cantilevers embedded within PDMS. The sensor detects the perpendicular and the shear forces occur in response to the touch of the fine structure of the object’s surface. In this report, we evaluate the tactile discrimination capabilities of our tactile sensor by comparing the sensor’s output against the results of humans’ tactile perception of surfaces with different textures.
