Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Brain--computer interfaces (BCIs) control a device by capturing human brain activity.
Depending on an operating protocol, BCIs can be categorized into two types: synchronous BCI and asynchronous BCI.
In synchronous BCI, a user executes a task when a cue is given by the BCI system.
On the contrary, in self-paced (asynchronous) BCI, the timing of operation is dependent on the user, thus a command can be inputted when the user intents to do so.
Unlike the previously proposed self-paced BCIs, a method which chooses user-dependent parameters such as the position of electrodes and the time window of analysis is proposed in this paper.
The proposed BCI is based on steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs) responce of the brain to achieve fast and accurate command
input.
The calibration was performed to choose proper parameters for each user.
When using these parameters, we evaluated performance by investigating accuracy and an information transfer rate (ITR).
The resluts showed that the proposed self-paced BCI achieved almost the same ITR with a smaller number of electrodes than conventional methods.
