| (in English) | We examined argument-head distance effects in SVO and SOV languages (Spanish and German) taking into account readers' working memory capacity. We controlled for the increase of expectation (Levy, 2008), and so we predicted only locality effects, a slow-down produced by increased dependency distance (Lewis & Vasishth, 2005). With respect to working memory capacity, we expected stronger locality effects for low-capacity readers.Contrary to our predictions, high-capacity readers showed locality effects, while low-capacity readers showed antilocality. We argue that while the locality effects are compatible with memory-based explanations, the antilocality of low-capacity readers could be explained by an increase proportion of retrieval failure. | |
