Fiber bending can cause troubles in the optical networks due to a fiber loss increase. The potential fault location such as a fiber bending should be repaired before user data signals are affected. In order to prevent the troubles, it is useful to detect the change of the location high sensitivity. In this paper, we propose an OTDR-based technique that measures the second order mode of the backscattered light using a 1-$mu$m band probe light, which is below the cut-off wavelength of standard single mode fibers. Then, we demonstrate that our proposed technique can detect fiber bending that cannot be identified with a conventional OTDR at a wavelength of 1650 nm. |
