Factors associated with motivation to learn among engineering students were investigated. The results revealed that motivation to learn was related more strongly to a sense of accomplishment and a sense of understanding than to actual test scores obtained by the students, indicating that motivation to learn is heightened when a sense of accomplishment or understanding is high but is decreased when a sense of failure or ignorance is strong. Changes in motivation to learn during the term were divided into four patterns: enhancement, high-level maintenance, mid- to low-level maintenance, and deterioration. Compared with other students, students with enhanced motivation to learn felt that their scores on a midterm exam were better than they had anticipated, suggesting that successful experiences near the middle of the term can enhance their motivation to learn. |
