Changes in ultrasonic characteristics of echolocation sounds emitted by FM bats under acoustic jamming condition

(in English) We investigated jamming avoidance response of FM bats (Miniopterus fuliginosus) by using artificial FM jamming sounds. The bats shifted their terminal frequencies (TFs) of FM pulse by 1—1.5 kHz when the TF of FM jamming sounds was lower than the bats' own pulses. This frequency shift was not observed when the TF of FM jamming sounds was higher than the bats’ own pulses. These results indicate that FM bats actively shift their pulse frequency to avoid overlap of their own TF with jamming sounds. Furthermore, unlike P. abramus (FM bat), M. fuliginosus didn’t lengthen their pulse duration while they were exposed to the jamming sounds. Our findings also suggest that FM bats have species-specific jamming avoidance strategies.
